UPRISING STORM TO RECORD VICTORY

On Saturday 4th June we made a return to action against Eagle Claw, a new team competing in the AFL Senior Men's Division this season. Having lost our last two games we were keen to get back to winning ways, and that we did, in excellent style too!

Despite our win it would be our opponents who would create the first chance of the game on 6 minutes. A corner from the left was delivered into our box and headed towards goal, thankfully Rachad Thomas was well positioned to head the ball away from danger.

Having survived that early scare, we started to take more control of the ball and opened the scoring on 14 minutes courtesy of a well taken goal by Stephan Fiedtkou, who found himself clean through on goal and passed the ball into the far corner from twelve yards out. Six minutes later we thought we had doubled our lead, but Asharn Hodge's strike was ruled out as the referee deemed that Asharn had controlled the ball with his arm before shooting at goal. Soon after our disallowed goal, Tre Gumbs went close with a ferocious shot from 20 yards out that went narrowly over the bar.

We eventually made it 2-0 in the 27th minute with an excellent team move that started in our penalty area, a series of short passes helped us move up the field, before the ball was crossed into the Eagle Claw box by Stephan Fiedtkou and met by the right foot of Tre Gumbs who fired the ball into the bottom right corner. We were now dominating the game, but Eagle Claw were working hard off the ball which ensured we had to keep full concentration.

We went 3-0 up in the 39th minute through an excellent long-range strike by Rayquan Gumbs who found the top corner of the goal. In all honesty his shot was so well placed that it would have been difficult for two goalkeepers to save, let alone one! The score remained the same as the referee blew his whistle for the half time break.

After an impressive first half performance, it was very important to not let our standards slip which could have given our opponents a chance of getting back into the game. In that respect, it is pleasing to report that we started the second half how we finished the first period and increased our lead in the 54th minute. This time it was Stephan Fiedtkou who grabbed his second goal of the game with a well taken goal after being put clean through courtesy of a delightful pass from Matthew Brown. Just seven minutes later 'Fu' scored his third and our fifth goal of the game when he capitalised on a defensive mix up in the Eagle Claw penalty area.

We were now playing some of our best football of the season and in the 64th minute, Fu turned provider when he found Rene Thomas in acres of space in our opponent’s penalty area before firing a left shot past the Eagle Claw goalkeeper to put us 6 goals to the good. Although we were comfortably in control of the game, credit must go to our opponents who never gave up and their determination provided them with a chance get on the scoresheet when Darian Carty was adjudged to have fouled one of their players in the box. Sean Browne stepped up to take the resulting penalty and sent Darian the wrong way to make the score after 69 minutes, Eagle Claw 1-6 Uprising.

In the 73rd minute we increased our lead, and it was that man again, Stephan Fiedtkou who grabbed his fourth goal of the game, shooting low into the corner of the goal after a scramble in the Eagle Claw Box. Just one minute later we made it 8-1 when Matthew Brown put Ricardo Petty clean through on goal. Ricardo rounded the goalkeeper and passed the ball into an empty net.

Our ninth and what turned out to be our final goal of the game came ten minutes from time. This time it was Rene Thomas who doubled his tally for the evening finishing from close range after drifting into the box from close range unchallenged. This capped off a memorable victory for the boys and one that we hope will provide us with lots of confidence for the remainder of the season.
